You Asked For It – How do YOU know there’s a God?

Today’s question is definitely common and as about as direct as they come:

“How do YOU know there’s a God?”

My answer to this question is very similar to a story found in John 9. Jesus performed a miracle where he gave sight to a man that had been born blind. The healing caused a commotion amongst the religious leaders because they many trying to make a case against Jesus and snuff out his rapidly growing influence. They had a dilemma on their hands because there was no way that anyone could perform such miracles that wasn’t sent by God. They had the man tell them exactly what had happened and he told them. They still couldn’t believe what they were hearing so they called in the man’s parents, they then confirmed his identity and that he had indeed been blind since birth yet now he can see! They turned to the man once again and here is what happened:

John 9:24-33 (NLT)
24 So for the second time they called in the man who had been blind and told him, “God should get the glory for this,[b]because we know this man Jesus is a sinner.” 25 “I don’t know whether he is a sinner,” the man replied. “But I know this: I was blind, and now I can see!” 26 “But what did he do?” they asked. “How did he heal you? 27 “Look!” the man exclaimed. “I told you once. Didn’t you listen? Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples, too?”28 Then they cursed him and said, “You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses! 29 We know God spoke to Moses, but we don’t even know where this man comes from.”30 “Why, that’s very strange!” the man replied. “He healed my eyes, and yet you don’t know where he comes from? 31 We know that God doesn’t listen to sinners, but he is ready to hear those who worship him and do his will. 32 Ever since the world began, no one has been able to open the eyes of someone born blind. 33 If this man were not from God, he couldn’t have done it.”

So back to the question, “How do I know there is a God?”

I once was blind, but now I see!

Throughout my life I’ve searched for meaning and fulfillment. I’ve looked for it in all our culture, our country and our world has to offer and I’ve come up empty time and again. I’ve struggled with myself in every area you can imagine, self worth, self identity, self confidence. I battle addiction, abuse & abandonment. I eventually found myself at the end of myself with nowhere left to turn …. So I turned to God & He met me at the place of my need. Ever since I turned my life over to Him everything has changed. I am no longer searching for meaning or fulfillment … I’ve found it! I was blind, but now I can see.

Now I’m not going to pretend that life has been all roses and butterflies since, it hasn’t. I still struggle, I still hurt at times. Jesus said that in this world there will be trouble, but I have taken heart that He has indeed overcome the world. That is why I know there is a God … just like the blind man, He has changed everything for me.
