You Asked For It – Living In The Promises of God

How do I live in the promises of God every day with confidence?

It’s incredible to see the depth of the promises of God, and it is as amazing to understand the sheer number of promises, promises that cover our entire lives. God promises to give us a hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11), to protect us (2 Thessalonians 3:3) to impart wisdom to us (James 1:5), to be a to help us (Psalm 46:1), to give us mercy and love (Ephesians 2:4-5) and to fulfill countless others that breathe life into us and place an identity on us.

When we embrace these promises they not only provide us hope, but also enable us to live an identity that is free of fear as we realize that His nature is what should inform the way we view ourselves and our circumstances. Living into that identity gives such freedom!

So, how do you do that? How can you embrace the truths God gives to you through these promises in the Bible?

I believe these three daily disciplines will help get you started. At The Well, we’ve called this practice the Triple Challenge.

1) Read
Spending time in God’s Word will allow you to discover new truths and reaffirm the ones that He has spoken to you in the past. The more time you spend, the more readily you will be reminded of these life-changing truths. In a world so full of distractions, I know I need the constant reminder! Joshua 1:8 provides a powerful challenge to us, “Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.” Memorizing particular promises will help cement things in your heart even further. So the first step to living out God’s promises daily is to know them, by spending time discovering them each day.

2) Listen
As followers of Christ, we believe we can hear from God and receive direction and instruction for our lives. In order to hear His voice, however, we need to give him an opportunity to speak. Spending a few quiet minutes each day, readily waiting for God to speak, can be a powerful thing. With practice, tuning out the noise of life and the to-do list for the day becomes easier. In these moments, we give God an opportunity to speak promises over our life that we can hold onto through life’s inevitable ups and downs. Jotting down the things you believe God is saying to you in a journal can really help to clarify what He’s spoken. To understand more about how to hear God’s voice, you can check out Pastor Jerry’s message from the series “You Asked for It” here.

3) Pray
Reading the Bible and listening to God’s voice are two ways He speaks to us. Just as we do in our earthly conversations, our natural response should be to reciprocate the communication. As we focus specifically on God’s promises, we can do that by thanking God for the promises that we’ve received, confessing the times when we’ve forgotten those promises and lived outside of His plan and asking Him to solidify the promises that He’s spoken over us in our time with Him.

One of God’s promises is that He came to earth so we could have a ‘rich and satisfying life’ (John 10:10). As we read about and embrace His promises, listen to His voice and respond through prayer, we can be impacted daily and walk with confidence knowing who are God is and who He has made us to be!
